Heads Up! International Week of Deaf People is Coming

From the 19th to the 25th of September 2022, we will celebrate the International Week of Deaf People. Created by The World Federation of the Deaf, the theme for this particular week will be “Building Inclusive Communities for All.” As a community, we celebrate the efforts of different governments, deaf communities, and civil societies to create inclusive communities for all.

At the same time, on the 23rd, we celebrate the International Day of Sign Language. The theme for this year is "Sign Languages Unite Us!" Did you know that sign language is not the same everywhere? There are around 300 different forms of sign language around the world.

Declared for the first time in 2009, Deaf Week is celebrated during the last week of September every year. There will be a different topic for every day of this event.

Monday 19- Sign Languages in Education

Tuesday 20- Sustainable economic opportunities for deaf people

Wednesday 21- Health for all

Thursday 22- Safeguarding deaf people in times of crisis

Friday 23- Sign Languages Unite us!

Saturday 24- Intersectional Deaf Communities

Sunday 25- Deaf Leadership for Tomorrow.

How Can I Join the Celebration?

You can celebrate the International Week of Deaf People in many different ways! In the video below, the National Association of the Deaf suggests different ways anybody can join this celebration. For example, volunteer at a Deaf school, buy products from deaf-owned companies, caption your posts, and many more!
