Dicapta and Teach Access Join Forces for Media Accessibility

A group of students sitting at computer workstations while an instructor points at a screen, guiding them in a collaborative learning session. At Dicapta, we are committed to breaking down accessibility barriers in media, ensuring that audiovisual content is inclusive for all. In alignment with this mission, we are thrilled to collaborate with Teach Access on the Fellows for Accessible Media pilot program, a six-month initiative aimed at equipping faculty and students with essential media accessibility skills.

About Teach Access and the Fellows Program
Teach Access is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing digital accessibility knowledge among the next generation of professionals. Their Teach Access Fellowship Program supports faculty or academic support staff in higher educational institutions in learning about inclusive design and accessibility best practices, fostering innovation that benefits all users. By partnering with Teach Access, Dicapta is helping Fellows integrate media accessibility into their work, ensuring a more inclusive digital future.
Nine members of the 2024 Teach Access Fellows cohort are participating in this program, bringing diverse perspectives and expertise to the initiative.

Fellows for Accessible Media Program
The program includes two key workshops where Fellows gain direct experience with accessibility tools:

  • A Visual Accessibility Workshop on January 15 introduced seven Fellows to the fundamentals of captions and audio descriptions, highlighting their impact on media inclusivity.
  • A Training on All4Voicing Lite on February 3 focuses on using Dicapta’s audio description tool to enhance content accessibility efficiently.

Following the workshops, participants are required to submit a project proposal outlining their objectives, expected outcomes, and target audience. Each participant will receive access to All4Voicing Lite for up to five users. The program will culminate in a Final Showcase in May, where participants will present their projects, demonstrating how they have incorporated media accessibility into their work.
The program is made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of Education’s TV Access grant (H327C210001), which supports initiatives that promote accessibility in media.

Shaping the Next Generation of Accessibility Advocates
By equipping faculty with practical accessibility tools, the Fellows for Accessible Media program fosters a culture of inclusion in content creation. Each participant will receive a certificate in media accessibility training, recognizing their contribution to making media more accessible to everyone.

We are proud to partner with Teach Access in this transformative initiative and look forward to seeing the impact these Fellows will make in the accessibility landscape. Stay tuned for updates as the program progresses!
