Canal 22 Internacional formidable ally in the broadcast of programming with accessibility

Since last year Canal 22 Internacional became a formidable ally for the broadcast of Spanish programming with accessibility. Between June 2018 and July 2019, Canal 22 Internacional has broadcasted 170 hours of programming with captions and video description that include programming for children, programming about nature, food and documentaries.

Canal 22 Internacional is presenting an average of 10 hours weekly, equivalent to 40 hours monthly of Spanish language programming with accessibility. To add a perspective about this great effort for accessible TV, let's compare these numbers to what the regulation for video description requires. The Federal Communications Commission requires the covered stations to provide 87.5 hours of video description for English programming per quarter. The regulation does not include video description for Spanish programming. Canal 22 Internacional is offering 120 hours per quarter.

In its effort to promote this type of programming, Canal 22 Internacional also created several weekday and weekend programming slots to broadcast the accessible programming.

Weekend
First broadcast - Saturday and Sunday 5:30 p.m. ET / 2:30 p.m. PT
Reruns - Saturday and Sunday 1 a.m. ET / 10:00 p.m. PT, Monday 2:00 p.m. ET / 11:00 a.m. PT

Weekday - Nature oriented programming
Monday to Saturday 6 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. PT

Besides, Canal 22 Internacional created several dissemination campaigns to inform its audience about the availability of the programming with accessibility. The following excellent video summarizes the achievements made so far in our collaboration.

We thank Canal 22 Internacional's team for the outstanding job they have done to bring accessible televisión in Spanish to its audience with hearing or visual impairment.

Accessibility for this programming is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, under project H327C15009 “Captions and Video Description: Educational Tools for Hispanic Children with Disabilities”.
