WUCF-TV, your PBS affiliate in Central Florida, is supporting access to TV for audiences with sensory disabilities

Do you depend on accessibility features to have access to TV? Do you prefer American Sign Language over captions? Do you have a friend who is blind that you would like to invite to come over to your house and together watch a great series on PBS?

We have good news for you. WUCF-TV and Dicapta signed an agreement to provide accessibility for selected programming on WUCF-TV.

This agreement is part of the TV Access project, funded by the Department of Education. The accessibility features included are American Sign Language, for some selected series, audio description, and captions. By adding these features, audiences with sensory disabilities will have the opportunity to enjoy the superb WUCF-TV programming as much as viewers without disabilities do.

The series included in this agreement respond to the diverse interests of the audience. For example, if you are passionate about space exploration, Space Chase USA will give you insights on how transformative events of the space program affected the life of Cocoa Beach residents. If you are interested in history and culture, Central Florida Roadtrip will give you a unique look at this region’s neighborhoods. Nerd Nite Spotlight features passionate Central Florida nerds presenting fascinating topics in no more than 10 minutes in a casual setting. Meet the Helpers is another terrific series. It introduces children to community helpers such as 911 operators, firefighters, teachers, etc. and gives advice on emergency preparedness.

We can’t wait to start working on these and other new series that will be added to this collaboration to make sure we all have access to TV. We will keep you posted on when you will be able to enjoy these accessible shows.
