Let’s Go to the Movies at the NAPVI Leadership Session

The week of March 16, the National Association of Parents of Children with Visual Impairments (NAPVI) directed by one our advisors, Susan LaVenture, organized a leadership session for Hispanic parents and invited us to share our video description workshop “Let’s Go to the Movies.”

During the workshop, a short clip of a children’s movie was presented several times.  The first time, the parents could only hear the audio from the movie. The second time, they heard the audio with the video description. The last time, they watched the video with the original audio. This process made evident the benefits that the video description service offers to a blind person.

Many parents did not know that this service existed, much less where to find it. For several of the participants it was revealing to listen to the description and understand that the information they obtained from it was really necessary to fully enjoy the movie. After the workshop, several mothers offered their comments and their support to continue to spread information about video description.

Clara Berg, another one of our dear advisors, participated in the session with her workshop “Parents as Collaborative Leaders.” Through personal anecdotes and her own experience as a mother of a deaf-blind young man who lives a full and independent life, Clara is a source of inspiration and a role model.

Thank you Susan for making us part of the NAPVI leadership session. Occasions like these allow us to make the parents of children with visual disabilities more aware of video description, which is a very powerful tool for the greater inclusion of their children in society.
