Discovery en la Escuela Content Now Accessible
Today is a day to celebrate! We are very pleased to announce that the wonderful audiovisual content of Discovery en la Escuela is accessible starting today.
What does this mean? It means that if you are a Spanish speaking student with visual or hearing limitations, you and your parents, teachers, and friends only have to go to Discovery en La Escuela to find a link near the top of the page to the accessible videos section. In that section you’ll be able to enjoy each video with video description and captions. It doesn’t matter where in the world you are, you’ll always be welcome and you can learn, enjoy, and share the wonders of Discovery en la Escuela’s world.
What happens if you want to watch a Discovery en la Escuela video with your family, your class, or a group of friends who may have different individual accessibility needs? No problem! Very soon you’ll be able to download the video description and captions of Curiosidad Infinita videos to your mobile device, which means that each person will be able to either hear the video description and/or read the captions on their own device while the group watches a single screen. That way everyone can enjoy the video together without interrupting the experience of others. The Curiosidad Infinita clips are short videos taken from Discovery programs. Every clip includes a question that can be answered after watching the video.
We praise Discovery en la Escuela for using the technology to enhance the experience of people with hearing and visual disabilities who watch their educational videos.
None of this would have been possible without the joint effort and support of:
- The Department of Education through its initiative “Television Access,”
- The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid through its work on accessibility technology,
- Dicapta’s captioning and description project, “Captions and Video Description: Educational Tools for Hispanic Children with Disabilities,” and
- Discovery en la Escuela’s multidisciplinary team whom we applaud and express our deep gratitude.
Don’t wait! Go explore the phenomenal content of Discovery en la Escuela.
Note: Video description is a technique whereby a narrator gives information about visual elements that can’t be inferred only by listening to the audio of a movie, video, or any other audiovisual material. Similarly, captions provide audible information such as dialogue, environmental sounds, music, etc., in the form of text.
