September events

Let’s go the Movies and Describing Workshop at Saint Joseph School for the Blind

Dicapta will be offering workshops on September 29th and 30th at Saint Joseph School for the Blind in Jersy City, NJ. These workshops are part of this year’s welcoming events for the school. School principal Dr. Anthony Lentine and his team organized a series of activities and workshops for the parents, teachers, and students. Dicapta is honored to be included.

Dicapta will offer its workshop “Let’s Go to the Movies” on the evening of the 29th. There will be two simultaneous sessions, one in English and one in Spanish. “Let’s Go to the Movies” is a workshop designed to demonstrate the impact of video description on the enjoyment and understanding of audiovisual media by people with sensory disabilities.

During the lunch hour on September 30th, Dicapta brings a hands-on workshop where teachers, assistants, and therapists will have the opportunity to experience description and learn the rules of professional video description so they can use them later when needed in the classroom.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to disseminate our message about the importance and the need of including description in audiovisual media,” commented Maria Diaz, Dicapta’s president. All children, regardless of their sensory limitations, have the right to actively participate and enjoy audiovisual programs. Video description is one way of making this possible.

Communication -  Spanish Webinar Series

On Saturday, September 24th at 3 pm ET, our friends from the National Center on Deaf-Blindness (NCDB), the National Family Association for Deaf-Blind (NFADB), and the California Deaf-Blind Services (CDBS) have partnered to present a webinar about the important issue of communication and how to better understand our children with deaf-blindness.

This webinar is an opportunity for parents, family members, caregivers, and educators to learn the importance of expressive and receptive communication. It is important to understand that communication happens beyond just verbal -- using different modalities such as body language, behavior, etc. The webinar will be presented by two members of our advisory group: Myrna Medina and Clara Berg. They are both mothers of children with deaf-blindness and have worked for many years providing support to families of children with deaf-blindness.

This webinar will be available in various formats:

  • Voice
  • Captioned in Spanish
  • Video recorded
  • A transcript will be available on the NCDB website after the webinar.
